A
Message From The Executive Director
Winter 2013
Aloha,
Thank
you to all the passionate volunteers and donors who have given so much of their
time and money to Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii since we were founded in 1982.
Prevent
Child Abuse Hawaii was started by a group of human service providers who became
convinced the community needed a voice dedicated to child abuse and
neglect. In that founding year of 1982,
this group became the Hawaii Chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America and in
1987, became a participating agency of Aloha United Way. Our mission is to prevent child abuse through
education, public awareness and advocacy which promote positive parenting and
healthy families where children are valued and loved. All programs are designed for the general
public and center around providing parents and caregivers with the support and
skills they need to perform as effectively as possible.
Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii’s child abuse and neglect prevention
strategy is designed to mobilize the entire Hawaii community to come together
in partnership
to foster the growth of the key protective factors within families and
communities that are known to reduce and prevent child abuse and neglect.
Knowing
that it takes many people, organizations and disciplines working together,
Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii serves on
several coalitions and committees where child and family issues are addressed.
We serve as the coordinating agency for the statewide Child Abuse
Prevention Planning Council, a collaborative effort of military, public,
private, non-profit groups, and community individuals coming together for the
purpose of eliminating child abuse and neglect in Hawaii.
As
part of a national movement to stop child abuse and neglect before it occurs,
Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii, Department of Health, and the Child Abuse
Prevention Planning Council, a committee of private, state and federal
organizations, sponsor Child Abuse Prevention Month during April each year. April is devoted to the issue of child abuse
prevention because of its high incidence of child abuse. The work never stops
however and as you know we work all year to prevent child abuse and neglect
with our programs and projects.
We
will be starting on a long range plan for our agency soon and will welcome your
input. Please contact our agency if you would like to be involved in the long
range planning of our agency or contact our agency if you have some strong
thoughts about how you think we can prevent child abuse and neglect in the
future.
Mahalo,
Aileen
Deese
Executive
Director
