Knowledge is power and to know about
the Period of
PURPLE Crying® is to possess the power to prevent abusive head
trauma also known more commonly as shaken baby syndrome.
According to the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome website, studies conducted on the Period of PURPLE Crying program demonstrated that reading and watching its materials about crying and shaking can “significantly alter knowledge and change behavior that is considered key to preventing shaking.”

The Period of PURPLE Crying® is used to
describe the normal stage in a baby’s life when they cry more often than any
other time. PURPLE is an acronym that helps remind parents and caregivers
about this phase as best illustrated by the image below.

Two key lessons to take away from this program:
- It is NORMAL for babies to go through a phase of increased crying – Don't ever feel you are a bad parent because you can’t soothe your baby;
- It is NORMAL and OK to feel frustrated when caring for a crying infant; however it is important that you do not let your frustration dictate how you treat your baby.
On Oahu, only Kapiolani Medical Center
and Tripler Army Medical Center currently send new parents home with a Period
of PURPLE Crying® DVD and booklet. With more financial support, Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii hopes to include the
program in our Never Shake a Keiki initiative.
We wish to spread more awareness about this program and provide every parent
and caregiver in the state of Hawaii with PURPLE power and confidence to
cope with a crying infant.
